Once a skilled fighter-pilot, Ben Grimm is now the Thing, a member of the world-famous Fantastic Four. Bathed in cosmic radiation during a fateful trip into space with his three friends, Ben was transformed into a hideous creature of craggy, orange stone with superhuman strength. But despite the fact that many find him unsightly, Ben has maintained his sense of humor and honor – because under that rocky exterior lies an ever-lovin’ heart of gold.

The son of a wealthy industrialist, Tony Stark was an inventive mechanical engineering prodigy. He inherited his father’s business at age 21, transforming the company, Stark International, into one of the world’s leading weapons manufacturers. While field-testing a suit of battle armor in Asia Stark was struck in the chest by a piece of shrapnel and taken prisoner by the warlord Wong-Chu. He was ordered to create a weapon of mass destruction – only then would he receive the operation needed to save his life. Along with fellow prisoner Ho Yinsen, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Stark began work on a modified exoskeleton equipped with weaponry. Yinsen designed the armor’s breastplate to sustain the industrialist’s wounded heart. Stark donned the suit in an attempt to escape captivity. Overcoming the warlord’s forces, Stark returned to America and redesigned the suit. Inventing the cover story that Iron Man was his bodyguard, he embarked on a double life as a billionaire industrialist and costumed adventurer.

With the power to perfectly duplicate any fighting style he observes, the Taskmaster is an expert in countless forms of combat. Besides working as a hired gun himself, he trains henchmen for other criminals – teaching them how to counter the super heroes he has studied. His protégés have included the so-called Evil Versions: Bloodspider, Deathshield and Jagged Bow. The Taskmaster has faced Spider-Man on a number of occasions, often battling the web-slinger and his fellow heroes together. In exchange for a commuted sentence, the government used the taskmaster to train John Walker to replace Captain America. Despite brief incarcerations, he remains at large.

Michael Badilino witnessed his fathers’ gradual descent into madness following an encounter with the John Blaze Ghost Rider and later became a member of a special New York City police unit whose assigned function was to bring down the Dan Ketch Ghost Rider. Unaware this Ghost Rider was not the one who had struck down his father; Badilino became obsessed with slaying the vigilante. When his attempts failed, Badilino turned to Mephisto for assistance. Badilino believed Mephisto claimed his soul and transformed him into an entity known as Vengeance. In truth however, Mephisto had merely activated a power that already lurked deep within Badilinos soul. Unbeknownst to Michael, inside him lay a shard of the great Medallion of Power, an occult object that contained the essence of the spirits of Vengeance.
